Letters: Community should beware sex offenders on Halloween |
The town of Annapolis, Md., has a great plan for its residences on Halloween that I think we should adopt for our town. We would like to think that every house our children go to on Halloween night is safe, but unfortunately that's not always the case. In Del Norte County alone, we have about 120 sex offenders living among us. Most of us don't know the addresses of these people. And I'm assuming that most of us would not want our child knocking on their door for a treat. Annapolis passes out flyers to every registered sex offender in their jurisdiction that has a picture of a pumpkin and in big letters, "NO CANDY AT THIS RESIDENCE." If the offender does not post these flyers on their front doors, they are in violation of their parole. Sex offenders do not have a right to privacy. Their names and addresses are posted on Meagan's Law. For this one holiday a year where our children come in contact with complete strangers, I believe we have a right to know which houses to avoid. I am more than willing to supply the flyers. Hopefully, Sheriff Wilson and Chief Plack will back me on this idea. I wish everyone a happy and safe Halloween. Terri Levezow Smith River |
