Letters: Campaign sign tampering happens to both sides |
Regarding Earl Morgan's letter ("Are Democrats only party entitled to free speech?" Oct. 16) about his Republican campaign signs being removed, don't think it's only the Democratic supporters that are doing that. I've had my Obama/Biden sign ripped down twice, and this morning it was gone altogether. I thought that tampering with campaign signs in people's yards was against the law. Obviously, some people seem to think that their opinion is more important than anyone else's. People wonder why there is so much animosity between the Republicans and the Democrats in this election. This is one of the reasons that people are getting so hot under the collar. There are those that think that only their opinion is valid, and they take it upon themselves to make it harder for others to show their support for their candidate. This is the first time that I have ever put up campaign posters in my yard, and I've had nothing but trouble keeping them up. I'll never do it again. I guess some people don't realize (or just don't care) that some of these signs are the result of campaign contributions they're definitely not free. So basically they're stealing property. The behavior of supporters on both sides of the political spectrum (in some places) has been utterly disgusting. This is supposed to be a country where you can voice your political opinions openly. These people that are out there under cover of darkness, deciding whose opinion should be expressed by destroying and removing signs from people's yards, are about the most un-American people I've ever encountered, not to mention cowardly, since they wouldn't dare come to my door and challenge my support for someone other than their candidate to my face. They just wait until dark, and then creep around doing their dirty work. I hope they realize one day that what they are doing isn't going to change a single solitary vote. In fact, it's only stiffened my resolve to campaign harder for Obama, and make sure that McCain doesn't get elected. Carla Capineri Crescent City |
