Letters: Harbor Comm. incumbents are bad for tenants |
All is not right with harbor tenants. At the harbor candidates forum, the incumbents were asked if they had worked out their differences with the tenants. The incumbents' answer was "yes." All the tenants' heads were moving in the "no" direction in unison. Of course, they want to be voted in again, or appointed. No incumbents please. If a candidate has health problems or plans to move soon, as commissioners Mario Deiro and Dan Kirkpatrick did, please don't run. We don't need, or want, more appointed commissioners. There is one harbor tenant who attends all meetings. The money they got from cleaning up scrap iron from the harbor was the $1 million-plus harbor wastewater treatment plant (part of the stink plant). Taking down of that portion of the plant was never brought up at any of the public meetings or voted on. One day the wrecking crew showed up and went to work. How does this happen? The RV park has a few years left on its lease. It is not feasible for us to continue to invest in the harbor. The master plan recommended keeping the RV parks and to communicate with the tenants. This hasn't happened. A longer-term lease is necessary for a new and increased investment in the harbor. The policy of five- to 10-year leases are limiting because you are not sure where you might want something 10 years from now, or leave it for commissioners to decide in 10 years. These theories have slowed harbor growth and gotten us where we are today. Vote to support growth. New candidates give hope for change. Rachel Towe Crescent City |
