Letters: Nickerson miscounts votes,is unmotivated to be clerk

Politicians are like diapers. They both need changing regularly and for the same reasons.

Such is the case with the current city clerk, Dianne Nickerson. Case in point: she counted the sewer rate increase protest votes and came to a total of 1,310 protest votes. After a recount by concerned citizens against fraud in Crescent City, it was determined that 165 votes were not counted. That's a near 13 percent accounting error. Unacceptable!

At a City Council meeting last July, Nickerson called for her hours to be dropped from 40 to 24 per week. Sounds like a great money saver, right? Wrong. The council approved the reduction in hours, but the catch is it takes effect after the November election. Sound like a political tactic? You're right. According to City Attorney Robert Black, there's a law that prevents the reduction from happening in the current term.

If Nickerson can really do her job in just 24 hours a week, why isn't the city's record management system up to date with a comprehensive general index? Public records should be organized and available to citizens and employees to see all the open, closed, recurring contracts and financial obligations that the city has entered into. Truth is she lacks the motivation the position requires.

Joei Sanches has honesty and integrity, which is needed to get this city back to what it once was: a place where your vote and your opinion counted. I know the citizens of Crescent City are smarter than the current administration gives you credit for, and you have all had enough of their lies, corruption and mismanagement of your money.

So, I'm asking you, come Nov. 4, vote a new person into the city clerk position as well as the three open City Council positions. We can't afford another four years of the status quo.
