Letters: Invasion of retail chainsdriving out local businesses |
I'm not really sure exactly how I want to say this ... so I'll just be blunt! I'd really like to know what the heck is going on with the "powers that be" in charge of what businesses can and cannot "move" here; they obviously are not using their heads. And, if they are, they're heartless! First, K-Mart leaves; then, Home Depot comes to town. Next, Starbucks appears ... and, now Walgreen's. Granted, having a variety to choose from is a pleasant change for those who have lived here a long time. It's a real pain to have to go to Eureka or Grants Pass/Medford to do "real" shopping. But, these new, national businesses arrive at what expense? Although, Ace Hardware and True Value are still open, and Java Hut, Better Bean and Mug Shots (now open with a new name) are also still open ... for how long? Everyone knows how difficult it is for the "Mom and Pop" businesses to survive the arrival of a national chain hence all the air-time new Walmarts get in most small cities they want to open in ... right? Right! So, are the folks "in power" trying their best to run the locals out of business? Those business owners are, most of them, long-time residents of this county with stores and businesses that have supported their families for years, decades, and in a few cases, generations. People whose hearts and lives have been the foundation of this entire area. (No, I'm not overlooking the tribes here, just talking about more recent events.) Sure, the larger businesses can hire more employees than the "old" ones, but, once again I ask, where is the loyalty to those who've given blood, sweat, and tears to this city and county? Teri V.
