Letters: Firefighters had compassion but neighbors did not

I was visiting at Crescent City Senior Apartments when a fire broke out in one of the units ("Fire at senior apartments," Nov. 5). I would like to take this opportunity to comment on your local volunteer fire department. These men and women were wonderful. They were professional and showed great concern and compassion to the elderly residents of the complex. I was quite impressed by these men and women. Thank You Crescent City Volunteer Fire Department!

After assisting management with the evacuation of the complex, I had the chance to stand back and observe the situation. I was appalled at what I saw. Neighbors standing around gawking, offering no assistance to these poor elderly residents. Not a blanket or even opening of a garage door to allow these tenants to get inside out of the cold.

Crescent City, where has your compassion gone?
