Murder suspect is back in Del Norte |
Miller awaits arraignment in stabbing case Murder suspect Josiah M. Miller was transported to the Del Norte County Jail on Wednesday, where he now awaits his arraignment on charges stemming from the July stabbing death of 23-year-old Crescent City resident Michelle Dickson. Miller, 27, was previously being held in Curry County, Ore., where he was scheduled to face charges of murder and abuse of a corpse after he was accused of throwing Dickson’s body over the 345-foot-tall Thomas Creek Bridge on U.S. Highway 101 north of Brookings. But after receiving evidence that indicated Dickson was killed in Del Norte County, local District Attorney Mike Riese made the decision in December to file charges here. “The follow-up the detectives have been doing has led to the most likely location for the assault and her death,” Riese said last month. “Evidence continues to trickle in verifying that.” On Wednesday, Riese said he was still waiting for evidence, but he would not discuss details of what it was. In addition to murder, Miller is being charged with a felony weapons enhancement and arson for allegedly setting fire to Dickson’s vehicle. He is currently being held on $1 million bail. Miller was arrested July 24, a day after a group of hikers found Dickson’s body in the ravine below the Thomas Creek Bridge. Dickson disappeared July 15 and her vehicle was found the following morning abandoned and engulfed in flames along South Beach near the intersection of Highway 101 and Sand Mine Road. That same day, authorities executed a search warrant at Miller’s home in Arcata and seized a computer, clothing from his washing machine and his truck that had been recently washed and had some of the upholstery cut out of it. Authorities said Miller and Dickson met in a parking lot off Enderts Beach Road the night she vanished so she could sell him about $850 worth of marijuana. Miller is originally from Del Norte County and was a friend of Dickson’s. |
