McCovey wins 2nd straight state title |
It’s two state titles in a row for Roger “Bronc” McCovey. The Del Norte High senior won his second straight heavyweight wrestling title by pin late Saturday at the CIF Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield.
Facing Angel Posadas of Foothill High in Bakersfield, McCovey came back after giving up his first takedown in two seasons to pin Posadas at the 5:05 mark in the third period.
McCovey finished the season at 47-0. “We’re on cloud nine,” Del Norte assistant wrestling coach Clinton
Schaad said.
While Posadas got the early takedown to go up 2-1, Schaad said McCovey
“was pushing the action and going after it,” the entire match.
Schaad commended Bronc for pinning his opponent. “You don’t get many pins in state finals matches,” he said. McCovey cruised through the first day of the tournament on Friday and
pinned all of his opponents in the first period.
Posadas was a surprise finalist. He was unranked at state and placed
third in his section tournament to earn a berth.
In the semifinals Saturday morning, Bronc had his closest match of the
year to that point against Josh Lee of Martin Luther King High, winning
4-0 to advance to the title match.
McCovey ends a remarkable career as a Warrior, etching his name as one
of the greatest athletes to ever compete for Del Norte High School.
He is the only Humboldt-Del Norte Conference wrestler to ever win a state title, let alone two titles, and is considered one of the best high school wrestlers in the entire nation. He demonstrated that with a vengeance Saturday night. See Tuesday's Triplicate for complete coverage. |
