Bus route to Gasquet starts soon

Crescent City-Arcata evening run planned

The Redwood Coast Transit Authority will begin a new route through Crescent City, Gasquet, and Hiouchi next month.

The route will operate three times a day on Tuesdays and Fridays.

For more information on routes and schedules call 464-6400 or visit the Web site www.redwoodcoasttransit.org .

Later in the year, the bus route between Crescent City and Arcata will begin running in the evening at 8:30 p.m. and return around midnight.

This will allow travelers arriving in Arcata on Greyhound and Amtrak transportation at 9:50 p.m. to continue to Crescent City, where they can spend the night and depart the next morning to Oregon via the Redwood Coast Transit connection to the Coastal Express, or the Southern Oregon POINT bus to Medford and Klamath Falls.

Ridership and passenger fare revenue have increased more than 200 percent on Crescent City routes since RCTA redesigned the local route system in May 2007, said RCTA Manager Mark Wall in a press release.

In addition to service expansion, RCTA has received nearly $1.2 million in capital improvements for purchasing new buses, a new mobile radio system, and passenger waiting shelters. Most of the funding for these improvements will come from the federal stimulus package.
