DN Grizzlies lose in district tourney title game to Falcons |
Team finishes season 20-8 The Del Norte Grizzlies season ended on Saturday with a 17-5 loss to the Eureka Falcons at the American Legion District One Tournament Championship. To get to the title match, the Grizzlies defeated the Southern Humboldt 76ers 12-7 earlier in the day. After winning 12 games the year before, Del Norte made a marked improvement this year, finishing 20-8. While disappointed with the loss, Grizzlies head coach Eric Enos said he was proud of the progress his team made this year. “They had an excellent season,” Enos said. “Even when they were down they never quit on Saturday.” If Del Norte had won they would have forced a final game for the title on Sunday.
Due to a lack of starting pitching, Evan O’Brien, who was still nursing an injury, started for the Grizzlies.
While the Falcons scored nine runs in the first inning, Enos commended O’Brien for coming to his team’s aid and pitching despite his injury. Del Norte did not give up easily and in the second inning Zach Hegelmeyer smacked a solo home run. Later in the inning, Greg Kirby hit an RBI single to bring in Nate Bruder to cut the lead to 9-2. Bruder finished the game 2-for-2 with two RBIs. In the fifth inning Del Norte scored three runs to cut the lead to 10-5. “We battled,” Enos said. “But Eureka is an excellent team” After that the Falcons put up seven more runs to take the game and the district title in seven innings. Eureka improved to 19-10 overall and will play in the regional tournament in Redding starting on Wednesday. Earlier Saturday, Del Norte came back from a 3-1 deficit to down Southern Humboldt to go on to the title game. In that game Cody Hoffman went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Kyler Davis earned the win for the Grizzlies.
