Warrior sports will be on TV this fall |
Games will be shown on Charter Cable Channel 4
Beginning with falls sports in September, longtime local sports radio broadcaster Chuck Blackburn and his producer, Dennis Gill, plan to show the home games of all the Warriors fall sporting teams on Charter Cable Channel 4. In the case of football, road games will also be shown. “We’re quite excited,” Blackburn said. “We really want to show and highlight all the teams.” Gill said he’s pleased that all sports will receive air time and that there will be another local forum to highlight high school students. “The girls sports are just as vital as the boys,” Gill said.
Last year, Blackburn had a show on Channel 9, a local public access
channel based in Brookings, called “Sports with Chuck,” which showed
highlights of games and interviews.
Blackburn said it was important for him and Gill to give people here locally an opportunity to see local sporting events in their entirety. The games will run on a delayed basis and will normally be shown a few days after being played. Normally, Channel 4 runs bulletin board information of Del Norte Unified School District events and meetings. Blackburn said he worked with the district and Superintendent Jan Moorehouse to get his show on Channel 4 and to partner with the district to provide this service to the community. “We think it’s going to be a really good relationship between us and the school district,” Blackburn said. “It’s a natural fit with the school district,” Gill said. Moorehouse said when she was approached by Blackburn she thought it was a terrific idea to show Del Norte High students in the field of athletic competition, as well as other activities. “We were very interested in giving our students more visibility,” she said. Besides sporting events, Blackburn said the plan is to show other school events at least once a month, such as theatrical productions and band concerts. Blackburn said he plans to continue as he has for many years now to broadcast games live on the radio as the voice of Warrior football on KPOD, located at 97.9 on the FM dial. For Blackburn, providing more exposure to Del Norte High athletic programs is something he is glad to provide. “I think it will give the community a more complete picture of our high school athletes,” Blackburn said, “and I think the kids really appreciate it.” Look in the sports page of upcoming issues of The Triplicate for the schedules of fall sports teams at Del Norte High. |
