Recognitions August 12, 2009

Richard Miles of Crescent City was recently awarded a plaque from the Del Norte Superior Court “in appreciation for time and hard work in keeping grounds pretty.”

Georgia Cockerham has been appointed to the National Board of Directors for The Compassionate Friends, Inc. (TCF).

TCF is a self-help bereavement group with the mission of assisting families toward a positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of any age, and to provide information to help others be supportive.  Founded in England in 1969 after a young hospital chaplain brought two sets of grieving parents  together, TCF now has over 600 chapters in the United States and a presence in an estimated 30 countries around the world.

Georgia and her husband, Bruce, were instrumental in chartering the Northwest Coast Chapter (formerly the Brookings Chapter) in September 2004, 16 months after Georgia's 27-year-old son, Zachary Ward, was killed in a motorcycle accident.

She and Bruce continue to be active with the chapter that is operated by a Steering Committee of seven local bereaved parents, and a nine-member Advisory Board including business owners, community leaders and executives who support the local chapter with its vision that "all who need us will find us, and all who find us will be helped.”

The Northwest Coast Chapter serves communities from Crescent City to Port Orford, Ore., and is one of more than 600 U.S. chapters serving every state and operating under the umbrella of The Compassionate Friends, Inc. national organization.

The Northwest Coast Chapter of TCF holds two monthly meetings, one for parents and grandparents who've lost a son, daughter or grandchild respectively, and a second meeting for surviving siblings who have lost a brother or sister. Everyone associated with the chapter are volunteers.
