Obituary: Anthony Machado Nunes
ANTHONY MACHADO NUNES, age 72, was a life long resident of Crescent City as well as a life long friend to many. He was personally motivated and driven—from the inside. And being strong willed and determined he kept all plans in fast motion up to the last moment. He had a competitive spirit, joyful humor, and a strong work ethic. Always starting and completing each new project to perfection.
Anthony was independ-ently occupied for all his 72 years. As a helicopter pilot and master mechanic, father, race car driver, heavy equipment operator, businessman, philanthropist, builder, inventor/creator, trucker, rancher, motorcycle enthusiast, lifesaver, entrepreneur, and as a leader. Anthony was instru-mental in saving numerous lives, people and animals, over his years. Anthony received the Del Norte Municipal League’s Award of Merit for Outstanding Service to the Community for his involvement in many search and rescue efforts and much, much more. Owner and president of Coast State Mfg., he invented and manufactured the “Wedged Hinge Pin” that was distributed in thousands of trucks across the nation. He designed, built and installed the World’s Largest Scissors, on the roof of Kim’s Hair Studio in the Crescent City harbor. They are an internationally recognized “point of interest” for Crescent City. He completely restored his ‘55 Ford Fairlane Sunliner Convertible (pinstriped dragons). A favorite at the annual Front Street car show. A favorite with the ladies! He loved flying. He built his first gyrocopter in the 60’s. He gave yearly beachfront helicopter rides on the 4th of July. Anthony’s word was his bond. He possessed great intellect. He embodied integrity, following simple, sound principles. Anthony relinquished his place among us, while at home, Friday, August 14th. He lived filling hearts with acts of selfless kindness; He was loved and well-loved in return and we are diminished by his absence. Anthony is survived by his daughters, Kimberlee Ann Nunes of Crescent City; Kristi Kay Nunes Carter and her husband, Leonard of Crescent City; brothers, Joe Machado Nunes of Concord, Calif.; Richard Machado Nunes and his wife, Charmaine, of Crescent City; and Tom Valpey and his wife, Linda of Lewiston, Idaho; and sister Diane Fugate and her husband, Roger of Hiouchi; grandchildren, Amber Jokela, Tricia Carter, Ashlynn Carter and great-grandchildren, Kaylynn Moore. Anthony was preceded in death by his father, Joe Machado Nunes; mother, Frances Alves; sister, Frances Maria Alves; and former wife, Patty Ann Nunes. A Celebration Of Life (potluck) will be held this Sunday, August 23rd, at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds Arts & Crafts building from 2 to 4 PM. Donations may be made to your favorite charity.
