Hostel holds open house |
Event celebrates the anniversary of hostel system Despite the looming possibility of closure, the Redwood Hostel is having a party. Hostels across the world are hosting open houses this weekend in honor of Hosteling International’s 100th anniversary worldwide and the 75th anniversary in the United States. As one of 41 American hostels holding open houses, the Redwood Hostel is inviting the public to a free event Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The party will include musical entertainment from local guitarist Jon Parmentier, games, tours and food.
“We will be having pastries, crepe’s, lavender lemonade and non-alcoholic mimosas,” hostel manager Kaci Elder said. Elder said that her son, Rory, and partner, Ryan Forsythe, spent the last week picking blackberries for the crepes. The first hostel was started by a German schoolteacher in 1909. The first U.S. hostel was opened in Northfield, Mass., in 1934. “We will also be holding several other activities throughout the week following, including a “World Travel 101” workshop at the Del Norte County Library and a night of hostel related documentaries,” a Redwood Hostel press release states. The Redwood Hostel could be facing closure due to $1.1 million in renovations necessary to make the building structurally sound and to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements. The National Park Service and Hosteling International have been exploring ways to keep the hostel functioning. “We should have a better understanding of the hostel’s future in the next month,” Elder said.
