Parks plan to dedicate operations buildings |
New facility built off Elk Valley Rd. to hold open house The Redwood National and State Parks will hold a dedication ceremony and open house Thursday for its new North Operations Center. The events are free to the public and begin with the dedication at 11 a.m. The open house runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The facility is located at 500 Aubell Lane off Elk Valley Road. The new operations center will centralize the maintenance activities for Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park, and Redwood National Park from 20 buildings to two. The two buildings were built as “green” as possible, said Redwood National Park Superintendent Steve Chaney. “It’s important that the National Park Service and California State Parks lead the charge in energy conservation and fighting climate change,” Chaney said. “These buildings are very energy efficient.” From skylights and solar panels to building materials that traveled less than 500 miles, the structures were built with the environment in mind, he said. Chaney said that having a consolidated facility closer to Crescent City means that much of the materials used for maintaining the park system will be bought locally. “One of our conscious efforts in constructing this facility was the ability to buy things locally,” Chaney said. Previously the redwood parks would buy in bulk and store the materials. “We would get materials from quite far away sometimes,” Chaney said. |
