Obituary: Allen "Al" Latham (Jan. 10, 1945-Aug. 20, 2009)

Allen “Al” Leroy Latham

Jan. 10, 1945 - Aug. 20, 2009

Allen “Al” Leroy Latham passed away August 20, 2009, in a local hospital.  He was 64.

A memorial gathering will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 26th (today), at the Salmon Harbor RV Park, 200 Salmon River Harbor Rd. in Smith River.  Park at the office area, and proceed on foot down to the river.

Al was born Jan 10, 1945, in Abbeville, South Carolina; a son of Wallace Victor and Helen Christine (Campbell) Latham.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years as a draftsman, and later as a drug and alcohol counselor on the U.S.S. Nimitz.  Following his military retirement in 1983, he worked at Walmart as a sales associate before moving to Smith River.  Here he continued employment with Walmart for 17 years, until illness forced his recent retirement.

Al was a private man.  He was quiet and patient, yet spoke his mind when he knew he was right.  He was generous, and helped those in need.  Most of all, he was a loving husband and friend.

He liked to fish, read, and do crossword puzzles.

Al leaves behind his wife, Pat of Smith River, and a sister, Betty Santalanta of Georgia.
