Walk honors 80th anniversary of park

Redwood National and State Parks will present a free forest walk at Stout Memorial Grove at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11, to honor the 80th anniversary of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park.

The park was established in 1929 in part from a donation by Frank Deming Stout. The Stout Tree is 340 feet tall and 22 feet in diameter.

Interpretive Ranger Mike Poole will meet participants at 10 a.m. at the Stout Grove parking lot off Howland Hill Road. The one-hour walk will honor the foresight of Frank Stout as well as the Save-the-Redwoods League, which was instrumental in the creation of the park.

Participants should wear sturdy shoes and bring water. For information call 458-3294.


Fundraiser dinner for fire fighters

A spaghetti dinner fundraiser to benefit the Gasquet Volunteer Fire Fighters will be held Friday, Sept. 11, from 5-8 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 155 Gasquet Flat Road in Gasquet.

Cost is $5 and includes a plate of spaghetti, garlic bread, Caesar salad and juice or coffee. A cash bar will be open. Tickets are available at Gasquet Station or the Gasquet Market, both located on Hwy. 199.

For those interested in becoming a volunteer, meetings are held the first, third and fourth Tuesday of each month from 7-9 p.m. at the Gasquet Fire Station. For information call Amanda at 457-3012.


Author to sign book about old Klamath

The Del Norte County Historical Society is inviting the public to its annual meeting and potluck luncheon with a special program about the 1964 flooding and destruction of Klamath on Sunday, Sept. 20 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 664 H St.

Author R. “Joe” King, who lived there at the time, will give a short talk, answer questions and sign his book, “Shadows in the Rain,” a historical novel about old Klamath. The book will be for sale following the program.

The society asks that attendees bring a dish to share. For information call 464-3922.


Celebration to feature local fare

Wild Rivers Community Found­ation’s “Fresh Take-Off” event to celebrate healthy communities will be on Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Brookings Airport on Parkview Drive.

A variety of local cuisine will be featured such as Rumiano cheeses, Taylor’s sausages, Fort Dick tomatoes, Alexandre Dairy eggs, Ocean Air Farm potatoes, and Smith River homegrown beef, as well as regional wines and brews. Assorted desserts will be crafted by WRCF board members.

The celebration begins at 5 p.m. with a barbecue dinner served until 7 p.m. An auction will be at 7:30 p.m. with live music by Nick and his Sax to follow. Tickets are $65.

Scenic helicopter rides covering 30 miles of coastline with Dan Brattain will begin at 4 p.m. A limited number of tickets are available for $150 per person, with an exclusive sunset flight at 6:45 p.m. for $250 per person.

Meeting for families who want to adopt

The California Department of Social Services, Adoptions Bureau will hold an informational meeting for families interested in adopting on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 6 p.m. at 749 F St. in Arcata.

Wildlife biologist to give talk

Redwood Region Audubon Society will sponsor a free talk by wildlife biologist C.J. Ralph on Friday, Sept. 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Humboldt County Office of Education at Myrtle and West avenues in Eureka. He will tell the story of how birds get lost in our area as they migrate between Alaska/Canada and Central/South America. Bring a mug to enjoy shade-grown coffee.
