Del Norte falls to Arcata 8-1
 Kathryn Gustafson, the No. 1 singles player for Del Norte High during her match on Saturday at home. The Daily Triplicate/Rick Postal The Del Norte High girls tennis team opened the 2009 season with a home match against perennial Humboldt-Del Norte Conference power Arcata on Saturday.
A highlight for the Warriors was the play of sophomore Kathryn Gustafson.
The No. 1 singles player for Del Norte, Gustafson earned the team’s only win by downing Abi Black 6-1, 6-3.
“Kathryn was able to really mix up her game with excellent lobs, volleys and a great first serve,” Warrior head coach Trudi Zottola-Gugliemini said.
While the squad fell 8-1, Zottola-Gugliemini said she was pleased with her young squad.
Gustafson is the only returning starter from last year’s team.
“I was very proud of the enthusiasm and sportsmanship of the girls,” Zottola-Gugliemini said.
“This being our first match of the season I was very excited about
how the girls (many of them being their first opportunity to
play) would react to the pressure of a real match,” she added. “They
were able to calm their ‘game nerves’ and push themselves to a higher
level of tennis.”

6-2, 6-1. No. 3 seed Meghan Webb lost to Gabby Ricord 6-2, 6-1. In No.
4 seed play Warrior Hannah Seaton lost to Olivia Johnson 6-0, 6-1. Del
Norte No. 5 seed Severin Walston fell to Alena Raymond 6-0, 6-0. No. 6
seed Kaitlyn Stephens lost to Geena Damian 4-6, 6-0, 6-4.
In doubles play Gustafson and Bausch fell to Black and Bernard 6-2, 3-6, 1-6.
In the No. 2 doubles match Web and Seaton lost to Ricord and Johnson 0-6, 1-6.
In the No. 3 doubles match Walston and Stephens lost to Raymond and Damian 2-6, 2-6
Del Norte will next face North Coast Prep on the road today starting at 4 p.m.
