CASA golf tourney a success |
Children in foster care often “fall through the cracks” of an overworked and overwhelmed system. Many go without the medical care they need, do poorly in school, or don’t get the opportunity to connect with relatives and loved ones. In Del Norte County, CASA of Del Norte is working to change all of that.
To raise awareness and funds for their program, CASA of Del Norte holds an annual golf tournament each summer. This year, the 10th Annual “Chip in for Kids” Golf Tournament was held on Aug. 29 at the Del Norte Golf Course. Among golfers, the CASA tournament is known as the “fun” tournament and 69 players competed in men’s, women’s and mixed teams, in both Handicap and Callaway categories. First place winners in each category won individual trophies, and a new perpetual trophy will be displayed at the golf course with the winners’ names on it. “We are really pleased at the number of golfers this year,” says CASA Executive Director Susie Minx. “We are also thankful for the local businesses that have partnered with us by donating either cash sponsorships or items for our silent auction.”
“This will help us train more volunteers and help more children,”
Minx added. “Sometimes a CASA volunteer is the only stable
relationship in a child’s life.”
Below is the list of the teams that placed first in their respective divisions. • Men’s Handicap — Wayne Bolman, Tomas Garcia, Greg Dillon, Keith Fields. • Men’s Callaway— George Wilder, Luke O’Laughlin, Erik Bjorkstrand, Joe Broadbent. • Mixed Callaway — Monte Mendenhall, Bill Renfro, Kelly Schellong, Jay Freeman. • Women’s — Carolyn Westbrook, Jane Rumiano, Marilyn Heyer, Amy Baird, Allison Eckart. CASA of Del Norte serves a vulnerable population of children who are in the juvenile court system due to abuse, neglect, or abandonment.
