Elk Creek Cleanup volunteers needed

The Pizza King will hold its annual cleanup of the Elk Creek area behind Safeway this Saturday at 10 a.m. Volunteers are asked to bring gloves and long-handled pruning equipment if available, and wear sturdy shoes. A large pizza will be awarded to the person who collects the most cigarette butts.

A free barbecue lunch and live music will be provided to participants of the cleanup at 1 p.m., prior to the DNHS Class of ’64 reunion, which starts at 5 p.m.

Club to offer info on exchange program

Students and their parents interested in the yearlong foreign exchange students program are invited to stop by the local Rotary Youth Exchange committee’s table at Back to School night, Sept. 30 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Del Norte High School. For information call Susan at 464-9591.


Volunteers sought for park info center

The North Coast Redwood Inter­pretive Association, in partnership with Redwood National and State Parks, is seeking volunteers who can donate four hours a week to help operate the Hiouchi Information Center from mid-October to mid-May 2010.

Duties include providing park and community information, as well as visitors’ purchases from its Nature Store. Volunteers can earn a free pass to California State Parks and receive a 20 percent discount on all store purchases.

Calif. Indian Day festivities on Saturday

Smith River Rancheria will celebrate Dee-ni’ Day with a host of activities open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 26 at the Howonquet Hall Community Center, 101 Indian Court in Smith River.

A horseshoe tournament will begin at 11 a.m. with a $300 prize for the winner, as well as a sand bread demonstration. A traditional cooked salmon lunch will be at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $5 for fish only and $10 for a  full meal. Stick games start at 1 p.m. for various age groups. Prizes range from $150-$700. Following the stick games will be women’s shell dice and men’s card gambling games.

A formal dinner for tribal members and their guests only will precede the event on Friday night at 5:30 at the community center.

Salmon feed at Crescent Harbor Gallery

An authentic Yurok smoked salmon meal, prepared and cooked by Sammy Gensay and family, will be on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Crescent Harbor Gallery, 140 Marine Way in the harbor. This is the same family that cooks for the annual Salmon Festival in Klamath. The menu includes cole slaw, baked beans and bread for a donation of $10, payable at the door. For information call the gallery at 464-9133.


LRT to hold ‘sandblasting party’

The Lighthouse Repertory Theatre needs 16-20 volunteers to help in a sandblasting and sifting project in the auditorium of its newly purchased build­ing at 369 G St. on Saturday or Sunday, Sept. 26-27, beginning at 10 a.m.

Participants are required to fill out a form prior to the work. Those interested should call Dan McGlasson at 218-8008.
