Warriors fall to Bruins in 5 games games |
It was a battle on the court on Thursday as the Del Norte High Warriors varsity volleyball team fell a bit short in a five game loss to the undefeated Brookings-Harbor Bruins on the road.
“It was a barn burner,” Warrior co-head coach Debbie Lorenzi said. “It went forever.” After falling to the Bruins in four games during the team’s first meeting of the year in Crescent City on Sept. 10, Del Norte was looking to make a statement. In the first game, the Warriors came out fired up and earned a 25-21 win. “We played them really tough,” Lorenzi said. But in the second game Del Norte could not keep the momentum going as the Burins cruised to a 25-13 win.
“We were just too happy about the first game win,” Lorenzi said. “We just gave it to them.”
The Warriors proceeded to drop the third game and were looking at the prospect of losing in four games to the Bruins again. But Del Norte refused to quit and took the fourth game 25-22. Lorenzi said a key factor was that the Warrior hitters did a solid job of “putting the ball away,” in the fourth game. In the fifth game the contest was quite close until the very end. With Del Norte up by a point, 11-10, the Bruins smashed in the final five points to win 15-11. “We choked,” Lorenzi said, adding that her squad did not handle the pressure well. The Bruins improved to 10-0 while the Warriors dropped to 7-7 for the season. While disappointed with the loss, Lorenzi said she was pleased with the way the Warriors battled and came back to take things to five games. Hopefully, she said, they learn from the mistakes they made so they know what they need to work on before the Big 5 season begins. The Warriors are seeking a remarkable 21st straight conference crown. |
