Warriors demolished by Dons |
Del Norte falls to Amador Valley 62-8 on the road
The Warriors had no answer for the Dons, who play in the East Bay Conference, considered one of the elite conferences in the state, as Amador Valley scored at will all night. On their first offensive play of the game Amador Valley got the ball all the way down to around the 10-yard line of Del Norte. The Dons scored a short time later on a seven-yard touchdown run with under eight minutes left in the first quarter. It only got worse for the Warriors. By the end of the first quarter the score already was at 28-0. Down 35-0 in the middle of the second quarter the Warriors showed some signs of life. The running game steadily moved the ball down the field and made it all the way to the 28-yard line of the Dons but were stopped on fourth down. And on defense, the Warriors finally contained Amador Valley and made them punt for the first time in the game. After the Dons picked off a pass by Del Norte they scored a short time later with under two minutes left to make it 41-0 at the half. On the first play of the second half the Dons returned the kickoff for more than 90 yards for a touchdown to keep on adding to the rout 48-0. A short time later the Warriors recovered a fumble and got the ball on their own 46-yard line. Del Norte moved the ball all the way to the 12-yard line of Amador Valley but coughed up the football. Amador Valley scored on a two-yard run at the start of the fourth quarter to make things 55-0 and scored again on a 45 yard run to make the score 62-0. On a kickoff return Warrior Austin Carpenter rumbled to around the 42-yard line of Del Norte, his second straight long kickoff return. Later in the quarter Roy Ward caught a long pass from Layton O’Reilley to around the 8-yard line of the Dons. On a third-and-two from the two Warren Bailey ran the ball in for the score with 1:39 left in the ball game. On the 2-point conversion O’Reilley connected with Nate Bruder to make it 62-8, which is how the game ended. The Warriors had around 160 yards on the ground and had 29 yards passing for the game. Del Norte dropped to 1-2 for the year while the Dons improved to 3-0. In the junior varsity game the Warriors were down only 7-0 at the half. In the second half the Dons went on a run to earn a 35-0 win. Del Norte has a bye week next week and will face Eureka on the road in their Big 4 Conference opener on Oct. 9. The Warriors next play at home on Oct. 16 for the homecoming game against Fortuna.
