K. Gustafson remains undefeated for Warriors

Photo courtesy of Jennifer Hurley Sophomore Kathryn Gustafson, the No. 1 singles seed for the Del Norte High girls tennis team, continued her excellent start to the year over the weekend.
Gustafson downed Alyssa Johnson of St. Bernard’s on the road 6-0, 6-1 on Saturday to improve to 4-0 for the year.
“By using different strategies, Kathryn is able to ascertain her opponents’ weakness early in the match and use this to her advantage,” Warrior head coach Trudi Zottola-Gugliemini said.
Del Norte fell to the Crusaders 5-4 to go to 1-3 for the year.
“The girls’ mental game is steadily improving and this
is exciting to see,” Zottola-Gugliemini said. “The team is continuing
to improve, which is our main focus.”
In the No. 2 singles match Samantha Bausch of Del Norte won 6-2, 6-2 over Maricela Resendez of St. Bernard’s.
No. 3 seed Whitney Gamboa of Del Norte fell to Moe Mello 6-2,
6-2 and No. 4 seed Kaitlyn Stephens of the Warriors lost 6-2, 6-2.
Severin Walston, the No. 5 seed for Del Norte lost to Caroline Cho
6-1, 6-0 and No. 6 seed Riley Sheets lost to Cristela Burns 6-4, 6-1
In doubles Gustafson and Bausch won 6-1, 6-1 while Sheets and Gamboa fell 6-4, 7-5 in No. 2 seed doubles.
In the No. 3 match Stephens and Walston won 6-1, 6-1.
Today the Warriors face McKinleyville at the tennis courts at Del Norte High starting at 4 p.m.
