“Open Grove” event at Lady Bird
The first of an annual “Open Grove” event will be held at the Lady Bird Johnson Redwood Grove on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 1-4 p.m. The Lady Bird Johnson Grove is located on the Bald Hills Road, which is off Hwy. 101, just north of Orick. During the event, park rangers will be on hand with copies of historic park photographs and a copy of the 1968 legislation that established Redwood National Park, an event that happened at this grove of redwoods. Rangers will present two forest walks during the event. At 1 p.m, “Lady Bird’s Legacy,” will focus on the role of Lady Bird Johnson in the creation of the park and her two visits to the grove in 1968 and 1969. At 3 p.m., “Redwood Forest Discovery” will uncover the mysteries and science behind the grandest forests on the continent. Both walks cover about a mile and take about an hour.
CASA of Del Norte presents an art contest open to children, youth, and elders with experience in California’s courts or Child Welfare system. The contest theme is “A Lifetime of Love: The Importance of Friends, Family, and Belonging.” Entries of original photography, collage, drawing, or painting should be submitted to CASA of Del Norte on or before October 16. Winners will be featured in the 2010 CASA Calendar. Entry forms are available at CASA of Del Norte, 579 Hwy. 101 South, or in the events calendar on its Web site at www.casadn.org . The California Department of Fish and Game Special Hunts Program will offer its 2009 Apprentice Pheasant Hunt on Oct. 31 at the Lake Earl Wildlife Area at the end of Old Mill Road. Participants up to age 15 will need to have a junior hunting license and an upland game bird stamp. A required orientation will be held at 8 a.m. and noon. Applications can be obtained at Coast True Value Hardware, Del Norte Office Supply, Wal-Mart or online at www.dfg.com . Only 32 applications will be accepted and must be received by the department in Sacramento by Oct. 5. For information call Steve Bigham at 464-6552.
Back Country Bicycles is hosting the national TrekWomen Breast Cancer Awareness Ride on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 10 a.m. This ride is being done across the country on the same day at the same time to raise awareness for breast cancer prevention, screening and treatment. The ride is open to men and women of all ages and abilities. There are two rides to choose from: a 10- and 25-mile ride, which start and end at Sunset Continuation High School, 2500 Elk Valley crossroad. The entry fee is $25, 100 percent of which goes to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. All riders will be given T-shirts, reusable totes, waterbottles and a post- ride meal. There will be drawings for prizes and tickets on sale for a chance to win a 7200 Multi-track Trek Bike.
