Huskies shock Warriors in 3 |
VB team loses for 1st time in Big 5 since 2005 season
A four year winning streak was snapped Thursday night. For the first time since losing to McKinleyville in 2005, the Del Norte High varsity volleyball team lost a Big 5 Conference volleyball game, falling to Fortuna 22-25, 21-25, 23-25. While the Warriors opened the Big 5 season Tuesday with a convincing three game win over Eureka, nothing went right on Thursday as the Huskies dominated things from the start to earn the surprise win. “It was the complete opposite of the Eureka match,” Warrior co-coach Pablo Lorenzi said. “Everything we did right in that game we did the opposite.” The Warriors made countless service errors, especially during key points of the game, Lorenzi said, adding that the team’s serve receive was also quite “shaky.” Lorenzi said he felt the girls were too “nonchalant” about the contest and did not take their opponent seriously enough. “We’re not going to walk into a gym and just win,” he said. “We have to work. As long as we’re working hard we’re fine.”
Lorenzi hopes that his team learns from this loss and understands
that while the squad is seeking its 21st straight league title they
have to give maximum effort in each and every game they play if they
want to repeat again.
“They need to grow up, mature and be consistent instead of being roller coaster players,” he said. “It’s disappointing when you know you’re better than that.” Lorenzi said that the only player that was consistent on both Tuesday and Thursday was Brilynn Welch, who he said played well, especially on defense in the back row, and did a good job passing the ball. The Warriors fell to 10-10 for the year and 1-1 in the Big 5, while the Huskies improved to 1-2 in the conference. In the junior varsity game the Warriors downed the Huskies 25-22, 25-19. Head coach Erin Louy said while the game was slow paced and both teams were flat ,“we played well considering.” Morgan Laney had two kills and two aces, while Ayashe Padon had three kills. Chandler Davis had two kills and one ace, and Karah Marcinek had one ace.
