Repeat offender sentenced |
A Crescent City man with a history of child molestation convictions has been sentenced to an indeterminate amount of time at a state mental hospital until he’s deemed “fit for society,” said Del Norte County District Attorney Mike Riese. Victor Von Houx, 44, was sentenced time for being found in the company of a 15-year-old girl at his apartment, a parole violation and sex-offender violation according to previous terms. “He was determined to be a sexually violent predator by every doctor that testified at trial, and that was no less than six doctors,” said Riese. Houx’s first conviction was in 1981 for the molestation of a 6-year-old. Three years later, while still on parole from the previous offense, Houx was convicted of the molestation of a 7-year-old victim. In 1998, Houx was convicted of failing to register as a sex offender. Houx also was convicted in 2006 in Oregon for assault with a deadly weapon and possession of stolen property. Riese said the mental health conviction was not a guaranteed sentence and that if Houx proves to doctors he is fit for society, he could be released. “I don’t think that will be the case though,” Riese said. “But they do make it (sentencing) indeterminate — he could get out sooner if he shows doctors, ‘Hey, I’m okay.”’
