Blaine Lopez to be inducted into CR HOF
Blaine Lopez, a former coach at Del Norte High, as well as a standout quarterback for the Warriors, is hall of fame bound. Lopez will be inducted into the College of the Redwoods 2009 Hall of Fame class on Saturday in Eureka. The induction will occur at halftime of the homecoming game against Contra Costa College. The game begins at 1 p.m. At CR, Lopez played basketball and football from 1987 to 1989. He was the Corsairs quarterback in 1987 and 1988. He led the 1988 team to a Golden Valley Conference championship with an undefeated conference mark and an appearance in the Santa Cruz County Lions Bowl. He was named the 1988 offensive player of the year in the Golden Valley Conference. He later played football for two years at St. Mary’s of the Plains in Dodge City, Kansas. Lopez earned his degree and teaching credential and has been a teacher and coach in Del Norte County for several years. This included being the offensive coordinator for the Warriors varsity football team. In 2006 and 2008 as head varsity boys basketball coach for Del Norte, the team earned Big 5 Conference titles.
A local bike ride for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation took place on Saturday. Approximately 86 bike riders joined thousands of men, women, and children across North America who united to raise money and show support for breast cancer victims and survivors, with $3,112 raised in Del Norte County. The Women’s Cycling Division of Trek Bicycle Corporation supported 100 Trek dealers throughout the U.S. and Canada, including local dealer Back Country Bicycles, in producing a single national event. Cyclists were offered both 10 mile and 25 mile rides starting and ending at Sunset Continuation High School in Crescent City. DN boys soccer squad downs Crusaders 8-1 The Del Norte High boys varsity soccer team dominated St. Bernard’s 8-1 on Saturday in Eureka. The Warriors jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead at the end of the first half and did not look back to earn the victory. Del Norte improved to 6-4 for the year. On Monday the JV team tied Brookings-Harbor 1-1 on the road to improve to 5-0-3 for the season. In the girls varsity game the Warriors fell to the Crusaders 3-1 to remain winless for the year. Rachel Lawrence scored the lone goal for Del Norte on a penalty kick in the second half. Weather permitting, the Warriors JV team will play Arcata on the road today and the varsity teams will be at South Fork on Wednesday. On Saturday the Warriors varsity squads face Fortuna at home. |
