Storm swings south |
The worst of it misses Del Norte
Del Norte County missed the brunt of a storm that hit the California coast Tuesday, but local rainfall was still heavy at times. A storm heading south from the Gulf of Alaska collided with the remnants of a typhoon from the South Pacific. In Del Norte County, it arrived with less force than expected. “Last week it was looking robust, but it did not come through as strong as we thought,” said Brian Garcia, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Eureka. “It moved farther south.” From Monday night to Tuesday at 9:30 p.m., 1.22 inches of rain was recorded at Del Norte County Airport. The record rainfall in Crescent City for the date of Oct. 13 was 1.3 inches in 1962. The rain is expected to taper off on Thursday, but showers will pick up again as the weekend begins, Garcia said. “It will be mostly cloudy with sun breaks,” Garcia said about Thursday, “Typical fall weather.” Any dry weather won’t last long, as rain showers are expected Friday and Saturday when the “next system heads toward our coast,” he said. Garcia said that the weather may not get appreciably better until the middle of next week. |
