A few dozen kids treated their rainy-day blues at Joe Hamilton School’s gym on Saturday afternoon for the Third annual Red Ribbon Week Fair.

The fair celebrates the beginning of Red Ribbon week, which is the last week of October each year, and celebrates being drug free and the life and work of a DEA agent who was killed in the line of duty in 1985.

The Del Norte County chapters of Friday Night Live, The Boys and Girls Club and Tobacco Use Prevention Program sponsored and held booths at the event.

The Northern California Indian Development Center also staffed an informational booth.

Kids were able to play games and get stamps for their participation, which they could use to get prizes.

Joe Hamilton’s Principal, Deborah Reynolds has worked with Friday Night Live in other areas for more than 18 years, so she even helped during Saturday’s event.

Reynolds said “we were hoping for more, but I think the rain might be keeping people at home.”

She said one of her main interests is explaining and offering kids alternatives to drugs.

“It’s my passion getting the message out that you can do healthy activities as opposed to drugs,” said Reynolds.
