CR hosts presentation on African harvesting |
Bridget Muyano Mulindi Meyer of Smith River will give a presentation on “Subsistence Planting & Harvesting in Villages of Zambia, Africa,” on Thursday at the Del Norte campus of College of the Redwoods in the campus library from 7-9 p.m. To reserve seating call 465-2300.
Meyer will speak about her experiences growing up in a village in Africa and her adjustments to life in the United States. She has spoken to other college audiences about the land diversity of Zambia, the staple foods and crops that Zambians eat and grow as well as how traditional people manage the land sustainably for future use. She will share the traditional roles of the village chiefs as governors of the people and as spiritual ancestral mediators, and demonstrate the importance of baskets during planting and harvesting of the crops. Her presentation includes songs and dances performed during Thanksgiving for the harvest and planting season. A short slide show is included. |
