Recycled art at fairgrounds today

A new recycled art project in the public schools, spearheaded by Recology Del Norte (formerly Del Norte Disposal) and Julindra Recycling, will have two booths at the “It’s a Green Day” event today at the Del Norte County Fairgrounds.

Some of the students’ art projects will be on display at one table, and the other will be an “arts table” for creating recycled paper art projects on site.

Hot Club of San Francisco plays tonight

DNACA’s first performance of its 27th season — the Hot Club of San Francisco, a world class quintet playing Gypsy jazz — will take the stage at 7:30 p.m. today in Crescent Elk Auditorium.

Tickets cost $18 for general admission and $12 for students (K through college) and seniors (65 years and over). DNACA season tickets provide significant discounts, guarantee admission and are transferable, and are also available at the aforementioned outlets.

Other DNACA performances include The Waybacks on Tuesday, Nov. 3, a Sunday matinee with California Guitar Trio on Jan. 24, 2010, and 7:30 p.m. performances by Gamelan Sekar Jaya on April 17 and Keith Bear with Jovino Santos Neto on May 7. For more information, call 464-1336.

 

Tsunami Swing presents ‘Monster Mash’

Tsunami Swing presents a “Monster Mash” on Halloween Night at the VFW Hall sponsored by Lighthouse Repertory Theatre.

Proceeds will go to help buy new music for the Del Norte High School band. Tsunami Swing will play jazz, swing and blues from 8 to 11 p.m.  

Cost is $15 with a $2 discount for wearing a costume. For more information, call 954-8773


Art show at courthouse

The Art in Public Places exhibit up in the courthouse is “The Art of Pen & Brush,” a one-man show by Crescent City artist Lloyd Kirkpatrick, which is hanging through Nov. 13.

The show includes a sampling of Kirkpatrick’s work, including intricate calligraphy and masterly oil paintings.

The Del Norte County Courthouse is located at 450 H St., and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.  For more information, call DNACA at 464-1336.


Photography show at gallery

The Coast Redwoods Art Association’s 2009 Photography Show is hanging through Friday at Crescent Harbor Gallery.

Ribbon winners, as determined by the public present at the reception, are Jon Parmentier for “The Weary Shall Now Rest” (first place), and George Cady for “Trout Pond” (second place) and “Chimayo Crosses” (third place).

Three honorable mentions were given to Cady, Stephen Thompson and Aaron Bohling. For more information, stop by the gallery at 140 Marine Way, or call 464-9133.


LRT holds fundraiser

Lighthouse Repertory Theatre is holding a BUNCO fundraiser at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 6 at Harbor View Grotto.

The event includes a no-host bar, food and prizes. Cost for the “buy-in” is $20. The net proceeds will go to the downtown remodeling of the  Leon “Red” Thomas Theatre (LRT) downtown.

‘Don’t Dress for Dinner’ concludes

Brookings Harbor Community Theater’s Production of “Don’t Dress For Dinner,” an adult comedy, concludes this weekend at the Harbor Performing Arts Center in Brookings.

Written by Marc Camoletti, the play is directed by Colleen Harrison.  Today’s show begins at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday’s matinee at 2 p.m.  Tickets are $10 each and are available at Mory’s, Words and Pictures and Chetco Pharmacy and Gifts.

Amateur Photography Contest

The sixth annual “Pacific Northwest Wonders” Amateur Photography Contest, hosted by the AmeriCorps Watershed Stewards Project and the Eel River Watershed Improvement Group, has a deadline for entries on Monday.

All entries must be accompanied by an official entry form and should represent one of the following categories: salmon/trout, wildlife or landscape.  Winning photos will be exhibited during the November Arts Alive at Old Town Coffee and Chocolates in Eureka, and winners will receive prizes donated by local businesses.
