Warrior girls tennis team downs Panthers
The Del Norte High girls tennis team downed the McKinleyville Panthers 7-2 on the road on Saturday. The win improved the Warriors to 6-5 for the year. In No. 1 singles action Kathryn Gustafson downed Aunna Cabeceira 6-2, 6-0 to improve to 10-1 for the season. No. 2 seed Meghan Webb lost in three sets to Kaylyn Sims 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. No. 3 seed Samantha Bausch won her match against Milan Morales. Kaitlyn Stephens, the No. 4 seed for Del Norte, downed Miranda Lamberson. Whitney Gamboa, the No. 5 seed, defaulted in her match, while No. 6 seed Hannah Seaton won 6-1, 6-1 over Amy Fontaine. In doubles Gustafson and Bausch won while Webb and Stephens were victorious. Riley Sheets and Seaton also won the No. 3 doubles match.
Former Del Norte Warrior football standouts Trevor Rook and Saxon Schultz had excellent games for Shasta College on Saturday. Rook, a sophomore fullback, rushed for 79 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown in the 53-14 win over Solano. The victory improved the Knights to 3-5 overall in their last home game of the year. Schultz, a sophomore tight end, had four catches for 63 yards, including a five-yard touchdown grab.
The Fighting Gym Rats, a local boxing and mixed martial arts group, took part in the “Tuff Man” competition at Cher-Ae Heights Casino in Trinidad on Saturday. Lanong Sridtharige knocked out his opponents in his first two matches in the 145 pound MMA division. He lost in the finals. Angel Rojas reached the finals in the 145 pound boxing division losing in a split decision. Local boxer Cory Roberson won in the 170 pound boxing division. Mark Ater, the defending champ in the 170 pound MMA division, had to withdraw from the competition after suffering a broken finger after winning his first bout. Also fighting for the Gym Rats were Elliot Gordon and Ben Sedeno.
The Del Norte High boys and girls soccer team’s faced Ferndale in their last home matches of the year on Saturday. The boys squad downed the Wildcats 5-0 while the girls squad lost 6-0. In the boys game, the Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead and scored two more goals in the second half to improve to 8-6 for the season. Jonathan Olvera had a hat trick with three goals, while Ian Jager and Travis Stacey each scored a goal for Del Norte. |
