Local man home after two years in missionary field |
Sterling Garrett Standring, 21, recently returned to Crescent City after spending the past two years as a missionary in the Billings, Mont., Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which comprises all of Montana and parts of Wyoming.
After a three-week training period, Standring served first in the area of Worland, Wyo., and then spent the rest of the time in various cities in Montana, including Great Falls, Missoula, Kalispell, Bozeman, Butte and Billings, and also for a time in Cody, Wyo.
While on his mission, Standring served as a district leader, zone
leader and an assistant to the mission president in Billings. On his
off days once a week, he enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Montana and
Glacier National Park. He also picked up a few other skills such as
helping out on ranches, roping livestock and using a lasso while
participating in service projects.
Standring was born and raised in Crescent City, and is a Del Norte High graduate from the class of 2006 where he was senior class president and active in music, in the bands and the Madrigal Choir. He was also the "Outstanding Athlete of the Year" his senior year, as well as a League White Star recipient in football and baseball and honorable mention in basketball. He was also the League Co-MVP for football as a wide receiver for the Del Norte Warriors in their 10-0 season in 2005-2006. Standring earned his Eagle Scout Award in local Troop 66 and attended one year of school at Brigham Young University before leaving on his mission. His future plans include returning to college in January and playing sports at either Snow College or Brigham Young University. Garrett is the third son of the seven children of Dr. James and Lori Standring, of Crescent City, to serve a full-time two-year mission, after his brothers James and Jason. The family recently took a reunion trip with all the siblings to help celebrate Garrett's return. |
