Gustafson earns top seed at championships

Kathryn Gustafson of the Del Norte High girls tennis team is the top seed for No. 1 singles players at the Humboldt-Del Norte singles championships.

Gustafson earned the top seed at the event, which takes place on Saturday at Fortuna High.

Gustafson finished the regular season with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Jenna Madsen of Eureka on Tuesday to go to 11-1.

It was the only win for the Warriors on Tuesday against the Loggers. Del Norte finished the regular season at 6-6.

As a freshman last season, Gustafson took the HDNC singles title for No. 4. singles players. If she wins the tournament on Saturday she will go on to play in the Northcoast Section singles championships.

“All the girls have worked very hard this season, and we are expecting a great day of tennis,” head coach Trudi Zottola-Gugliemini said.


Chuck Blackburn hits a hole-in-one in town

Chuck Blackburn hit a hole-in-one on Wednesday at the Del Norte Golf Course.

It was the first time in about 25 years that Blackburn has made a hole-in-one, he said.

Blackburn was playing a round of golf joined by golf course general manager Stacey McClaflin and Ed Anderson.

The shot occurred on hole No. 3 about 120 yards out and was hit right into the wind, Blackburn said.

“It was an exciting time for me,” Blackburn said. “I never thought I’ll hit another one again. I’m 73 years old. It gets tougher.”

Blackburn estimated that about six people a year hit hole-in-ones at the Del Norte Golf Course.


Del Norte soccer teams finish season at Mack

The Del Norte High boys and girls soccer teams concluded their season on the road against McKinleyville.

The boys team fell to the Panthers 3-2 on Wednesday to finish the year 8-7.

The girls team tied McKinleyville 0-0 to finish 0-13-2. Del Norte lost to the Panthers 6-0 in their previous meeting.

“It was a great improvement,” head coach Clar Byers said.


Gastineau takes 4th at cross country meet

The Del Norte High cross country team took part in another Humboldt-Del Norte meet on Tuesday.

Leading the way for the girls was Zara Gastineau with a fourth place finish. Shannon Benn was 26th and Taylor Jacob came in 34th.

For the boys Gabriel Bradley was 24th, Patrick White was 25th. Dalton Bradbury was 41st, Sammy Chan finished 53rd and Andrew Napier was 54th. Next up for the squad is the HDNC Championship event, which takes place in Eureka on Nov. 7.


Sign-ups for Rec. Dept. basketball coming up

Sign-ups for the Del Norte Recreation Department boys and girls basketball league will take place soon.

Sign-ups are on Nov. 7 and 21 starting at 9 a.m. at the recreation department gym.

 The basketball league is open for kids from kindergarten up to 8th grade. For more information call the recreation department at 464-7237.


Warriors homecoming game being shown

“Sports with Chuck” is showing the Warriors homecoming football game against Fortuna from Oct. 16.

The contest will be shown at 7:30 p.m. each night until Tuesday on Charter Cable Channel 4. 

Next week the program will profile the Del Norte girls tennis team starting on Wednesday.


Sign-ups happening for dodgeball and soccer

The Del Norte County Recreation Department is offering dodgeball and adult indoor soccer leagues.

The dodgeball league begins on Nov. 3, with games held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

The team fee is $160 with registration due by  today.

The soccer season begins on Nov. 12 with registration ending on Nov. 6. The team fee is $200 with games scheduled for Thursdays and Sundays.

Local swim club to host open house Nov. 2

The Crescent City Swim Club will be hosting an open house on Nov. 2.

The event will take place starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Fred Endert Municipal Pool located at 1000 Play Drive. The club is open to all ages up to 18 years old.

Those interested are required to be able to swim at least one  length of the pool, and to bring a parent and a swimming suit.
