Veterans Day parade, dinner on Wednesday

Military veterans will be honored for their service Wednesday with the annual parade and dinner in Crescent City.

The Veterans Day events will kick off with a parade at 10 a.m. and end with a dinner and a presentation by  Harlan Ziegler, a combat helicopter pilot who served in Vietnam.

The parade will start at Front and H streets and go up H Street to the Veterans Memorial Hall, 801 H St., said Carol Roth, who represents veterans for the Del Norte County Department of Veterans Services.

The grand marshals for the parade this year are World War II veterans, who were also honored during this year’s Fourth of July parade.

The group of veterans chosen as grand marshals changes each year, Roth said, adding that those who served in WWII are getting older and fewer are around.

“They’re all happy to be there,” she said.

After the parade, there will be a reception honoring WWII veterans on the steps of the Veterans Memorial Hall, and a reading of the proclamation making Nov. 11 Veterans Day.

On Nov. 11, 1918, the Treaty of Versailles was signed, ending World War I. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Nov. 11 Veterans Day in 1919 to honor those who served in the military.

“Social hour” starts at 5 p.m., prior to the dinner at 6 p.m. at the hall, followed by Ziegler, who will speak at 7 p.m., Roth said. Admission is free for veterans and $6 for everyone else.
