Gas station, condos eyed |
The Crescent City Planning Commission will consider two potential construction projects at its meeting tonight.
One would expand the existing Chevron gas station at the intersection
of U.S. Hwy. 101 and Elk Valley Road, and the other would build a
six-unit condominium on the site of the former Camelot Inn at Ninth and
J streets.
Redwood Oil Company is the applicant for the Chevron gas station project, which would include a new 10-pump fueling station, a drive-through car wash and a two-bay oil and lube facility. As part of the plan, Redwood Oil Company would also do some sidewalk improvements and landscaping. The proposed project site would replace a now-defunct gas station that was adjacent to the Chevron, and the Planning Commission will chose whether to give Redwood Oil Company a use permit and approve architectural and environmental reviews for the expansion. A proposal for condominiums at Ninth and J Streets is contingent on a variance from the city that would allow bay windows to be constructed on the building, which would project into the front and rear setbacks of the property. Elana Riedel, of Riverside, is behind the project, and her plans indicate that the condominiums would be a mix of two- and three-bedroom units with garages in a wooden-frame townhouse design. Currently, the property where Riedel wants to build is a vacant lot. It used to be the site of the Camelot Inn, but after being condemned, firefighters in June burned it to the ground as part of their training. In other commission-related news, the city is having trouble finding people to fill two vacancies on the board. According to City Planner Michele Rambo, commissioners Marge Shearer and Sylvia Bos are leaving their posts for personal reasons. Shearer’s last day was Oct. 9, and Bos is finished after Dec. 10. Their terms are up November 2010 and May 2011, respectively. Both seats are appointed positions, and the only requirement is that interested parties be residents of Crescent City. There’s also a short application form that needs to be filled out, and it can be picked up from Linda Jangala at City Hall, 377 J St. Applicants should be willing to spend a minimum of 15 hours a month to review materials, attend monthly Planning Commission meetings, and go to other meetings as needed. |
