Coats for kids requested

Coat donations are now being accepted for the annual Coats for Kids Campaign.

The campaign has been conducted for more than 15 years, and last year a record 535 coats were collected, organizers said, adding the need is even greater this year as the economic downturn continues.

“Requests through the Head Start programs and other partnership programs are already double from last year,” said Bicoastal Media General Manager René Shanle-Hutzell. “We’re counting on the generosity of our community.”

Citizens are asked to drop off “new and gently used” coats of all sizes in the “Coats for Kids” cans at Chetco Federal Credit Union, Ray’s Food Place, Shop Smart, Lucky 7 Casino’s fuel mart and House of Howenquet.

The coats are being collected from now until Dec. 31. They are then inspected, cleaned and distributed from Klamath north to Port Orford, Ore.
