Suspect in fatal wreck arrested |
Klamath man caught at Fort Dick residence A Klamath man wanted for fleeing the scene of a fatal car wreck in Humboldt County was arrested in Fort Dick on Saturday.
Merle C. Stevenson, Jr., was apprehended by the Del Norte County
Sheriff’s Office at the home of a relative on Morehead Road,
authorities said Monday.
“He was apprehended by the Del Norte County SO, and then transported to Humboldt County,” said California Highway Patrol Sgt. Matt Larsen. “He is currently in the Humboldt County Jail.” Stevenson is suspected of driving his 2000 Chevrolet Camaro off an embankment near the Del Norte County line while under the influence of alcohol early Friday. The car overturned at least once. Ronald G. Gifford, 62, of Klamath, died after he was ejected into the dirt embankment, the CHP said. Two other passengers received minor injuries and were not taken to a hospital. Stevenson fled the scene on foot, the CHP said. |
