Joseph C. Sleeper, 88, of Huddleston, Va., passed away peacefully after a long illness on Thursday, November 12, 2009, at Oakwood Manor Nursing Home, Bedford, Va. Loving husband for 30 years to Doris Sleeper (Adams), father of Shirley Peterson, Mary (Carl) Sallo, Barbara (Jack) Anderson all of New Jersey, and Becky (Dennis) Wood of California, stepfather of Glen (Marilyn) Adams, Kim (Shirley) Adams, Gail Adams, and Carey (John) Caldwell all of Ontario, Canada, loving grandfather of 19 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He is survived by sisters, Belle Ayres of Virginia; Bertha (John) Anderson of Maryland.
Joseph served in WWII in the Marine Corps. He retired from Pickatiny Arsenal, New Jersey formerly of Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland. Joseph’s passion was hunting, fishing and enjoying Smith Mountain Lake. Funeral services were held on Monday, November 16, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Moneta, Va. with Rev. David Lord officiating. A reception followed at the church. Visitation was at Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford, on Sunday, November 15. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethlehem Church Building Fund, 13586 Moneta Road, Moneta, VA 24121 or a charity of your choice.
