Del Norte Rod and Gun Club, Lake Earl Grange and California Fish and Game recently sponsored the Junior Apprentice Pheasant Hunt as part of the Game Bird Heritage Program on Oct. 31.

Over 30 young hunters age 15 and under were provided an opportunity to hunt game birds in a relaxed, safe environment, which provided all participants a greater chance to bag the game bird, which was pheasant. Local dog handlers provided their dogs to retrieve the birds for the young hunters.

We wish to extend our gratitude to our local sponsors for their generosity. Coast True Value, Englund Marine and Wal-Mart provided shooting glasses, hunter-orange hats, vests and prizes. Thank you to the many, many volunteers who gave their time and energy to make this an enjoyable and successful event for the youth of our community.

We are hopeful that next year we will be able to expand the number of hunters for this event.
