9th Binational health celebration |
Open Door Community Health Centers, Del Norte County agencies and Del Norte County businesses, with funding from the University of California Health Initiative of the Americas, worked together again this year to increase awareness of health and human services available in our community for county residents, with special emphasis on immigrants, migrant workers and their families.
The Binational Health kickoff this year was held at the Del Norte Community Health Center of the Partnership for Prescription Assistance, “Help is Here Express” bus, on Aug. 7. The bus travels the United States helping the uninsured find access to free or nearly free prescription medicines. An essay contest for students in grades 5 through 8, in cooperation with Del Norte Unified School District, was again held this year with winners announced at the Harvesting Health Fair, on Oct. 18, held at Smith River School, which included ethnic foods, health screenings, children’s activities and community services information. Prizes for this contest were provided by Chetco Federal Credit Union and the Del Norte County Binational Health Collaborative.

place, Matthew Hamm; and 2nd place, Julia Simmons. The 7th grade
winners are: 1st place, Rachel Malone, Castle Rock; and 2nd place,
