Obituary: Margaret Winifred Mitchell (Sept. 18, 1911 - Nov. 12, 2009)

Margaret Winifred Mitchell Margaret W. Mitchell, died Nov. 12, 2009, after decreasing health. She passed away peacefully with her son at her side in the Adult Foster Care facility in which she lived.

Born September 18, 1911, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She grew up and lived most of her younger life in Winnipeg. After becoming a nurse in the middle of the "Great Depression" she worked all over Canada at various communities in a nursing capacity. When World War II broke out she returned to Winnipeg to work in a Veterans Hospital helping the wounded Canadian soldiers as they returned home. In 1948 she worked a temporary stint in Crescent City to fill a nursing shortage here. In 1950 she moved to Crescent City to help fill that need for nurses in this community and following several of her friends who had moved to Crescent City from Canada.

She met and married Cyril "Mitch" Mitchell. A few years thereafter she and Mitch had a son, Jeffrey Brian. She and her husband lived a long and pleasant life together raising their son in Crescent City. Among many memorable moments in her life was seeing the tidal wave waters lapping less than one block from her home in 1964. Another was seeing her son graduate from college in 1977. She saved or helped many people’s lives in this community as nurse and an x-ray technician and as one very good person. She retired in 1979 from Seaside Hospital with a  certificate in X-ray Technology, which was her profession the last 15 years of her career at Seaside Hospital in Crescent City. After she retired she and Mitch became avid golfers at Kings Valley Golf course. Along with golfing she and Mitch became amateur carpenters/painters while helping their son build first one, then a second home in the Hiouchi area. Her husband, Mitch passed away in 1998 at age 89. She continued to live and enjoy her life, living in her home in Crescent City until 2002 when her health began to deteriorate and she moved into an adult foster care facility in Brookings. She was very well cared for in that facility for the last 7 years of her life. She was comfortable and mostly pain free with the help of Lydia and Peggy at the Adult Foster Care facility, until her passing.

Surviving are her son, Jeff Mitchell; nieces, Gwen Vielleux and Candice Sigurdson, both of Winnipeg, Canada and sisters in-law, Marjorie Gaskin and Francis Gillespie, both of Crescent City, and their families.

Private memorial remembrances have taken place. All thoughts and prayers for Margaret are appreciated. Please hold her memory with the respect and affection that she deserves and had for others.

All arrangements have been taken care of with the direction of Wier’s Mortuary.
