DN Warrior girls lose to Bruins on the road |
Del Norte scores only three points in second quarter in 53-41 road loss
It was not a good night on the hardwood for the Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team. The Warriors lost to Brookings-Harbor on the road 53-41 Tuesday night to drop to 6-3 for the year. Del Norte was coming off a three-game winning streak, which included winning the title at a tournament in Mount Shasta this past Saturday. The Warriors downed host team Mount Shasta 41-39. “It was like they came out nonchalant,” head coach Buzz McCulloch said about how his team looked on Tuesday night. “I don’t think they showed up to play tonight. They were flat ... I was disappointed.” In the first quarter the Bruins raced out to a 15-8 advantage. It only got worse in the second quarter as the Warriors could only muster three points to trail at the half 31-11.
McCulloch said his team did not defend well and let the Bruins run
at will down the court. He estimated 20 of their first half points came
from fast break situations.
He added that the girls did not handle the ball well and gave up too many turnovers to Brookings. In the fourth quarter Del Norte started to play better and scored 23 points but it came much too late as the Bruins earned the 12-point win. With the positive way his team had been playing as of late, McCulloch said it was disappointing to see them regress. Senior shooting guard Lauryn Lesina continued to lead the team in scoring as she has done in every game this year. She finished with 15 points Del Norte next plays at a two-day tournament in Myrtle Point, Ore., beginning on Friday. The Warriors will face Gold Beach, Ore., on Friday starting at 3 p.m. The tournament concludes on Saturday. On Tuesday the Warriors will travel to face Ferndale, which they downed by nine points at home earlier this season.
