Warrior girls fall to Gold Beach 60-43 |
MYRTLE POINT, Ore. — A hot shooting hand from long distance by Gold Beach doomed the Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team on Friday. Playing at a tournament in Myrtle Point, Ore., the Warriors lost to the Panthers of Gold Beach, Ore., 60-43. A key reason was the that the Panthers made eight three-pointers for the contest, Warrior head coach Buzz McCulloch said. “We didn't cover them well, and we let them shoot the three,” he said. “Our girls just didn’t come on with good energy.” After winning three straight games and a tournament title at Mount Shasta Del Norte is on a two-game losing streak and dropped to 6-4 for the year. The Warriors never led in the game and were unable to come close, McCulloch said. Del Norte went a respectable 12-for-18 from the free throw line and made 11 field goals. Leading the way for Del Norte was senior Lauryn Lesina with 17 points. Kristyn Rook had eight points, while Ari Sharp, Ariana Spalding, Lexie Nelson and Katy Suzuki each had four points. Today, the Warriors will face the loser of the Friday night game of Myrtle Point versus Siuslaw High of Florence, Ore. On Tuesday Del Norte will face Ferndale on the road and will not play again until Jan. 4 at Hoopa.
