Warriors drop tourney game to Eagles 45-42 |
After falling by 30 points the night before to Enterprise the Del Norte High varsity boys basketball team had a better showing on Tuesday.
But, in the end, the Warriors still came up a bit short at the 14th annual Jamie Angley Hornet Classic, falling to the West Valley Eagles of Cottonwood 45-42 to drop to 3-7 for the year. The game was a back-and- forth affair, with the score tied at eight apiece at the end of the first quarter. Things continued to be tightly contested in the second quarter. Down 18-17, Warrior junior Brandon Kakitsuka drained a three-pointer near the end of the quarter to give Del Norte a 20-18 advantage at the end of the first half. The Warriors had some momentum in the third quarter and were able to build a 32-29 lead at the end of the quarter. In the final quarter, with the Warriors leading, thanks to key shots made by the squad, including a three-pointer by senior Scottie Skeen, things started to deflate when Del Norte received a technical foul. The Eagles took advantage, nailing its three free throw shots and proceeded to drain a three-pointer to give them a 38-37 lead. While the Warriors came back the Eagles made shots when they needed to to seal the win. With about 21 seconds remaining West Valley made two free throws to go up 45-42. The Warriors tried to make a three-pointer to send the game into overtime but were unable to as the Eagles flew away with the three point win to improved to 6-6 for the year.
