Take a tour of local artwork on Friday

Del Norte County’s natural amenities include trees, the ocean, wildlife, the river, many kinds of stone and vistas of all these.

Other precious commodities include our local and regional artists and artisans, who often use and reflect these amenities in their creations. As you stroll at your leisure from place to place during the Crescent City Art Walk from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, enjoying the company of others, you will see items as varied as kelp baskets, raku pottery, vibrant oil paintings, a large metal dragonfly sculpture  and much more.

Here are a few questions and answers concerning the Crescent City Art Walk:

Why have an Art Walk?

An art walk is a social time to spend with colleagues, friends and family, often while enjoying refreshments.  It’s an opportunity to set foot in a business or space that you may have never visited, or return to a familiar place and see it with new eyes.

It is a time to enjoy the variety of the mother lode of the visual arts in our area, and perhaps hear some live music along the way. It’s a celebration of community.

Is there a specific route to follow?

Not really.  You can start by walking around the Crescent City Harbor area, and then drive to the downtown Crescent City area and walk around, or vice versa. Be sure to stop by Bay Studios on Sunset Circle, behind the Bayview Inn, along the way. There are maps created by Hospitality 101 available at each of the participating sites.

Where do I park?

Anywhere in the downtown area near the intersection of 3rd

and H streets will do. Potential public parking lots near participating sites include include in front of the Del Norte County Library or at the Courthouse.  From any of these places, it’s an easy walk to all the downtown venues.

In the harbor area, park anywhere near Crescent Harbor Gallery on Marine Way; Talking Crow Studio is only three doors away.

What will I see?

Harbor area: On display at Crescent Harbor Gallery are artworks by approximately 30 members in a wide variety of media, as well as pastels and oils by artist of the month Sandy Bonney.

Talking Crow Studio has ceramics by Rika Blue and her daughters, photography by Mark Renner, washi paper eggs and baskets. Bay Studios features raku/high fire pottery by Mike Selfridge and Willie Blakley, as well as glass mosaics by Richard & Penelope Fleming, turned wooden bowls by Mike Tompkins and watercolors by Rick Bennett.

Hanging at the Del Norte County Library are acrylics by Lloyd Kirkpatrick, and watercolors/collages by B. J. Clausen. Tomasini’s Enoteca on Third St. houses the black and white photography of Karen Sullivan, and handmade jewelry by Coco Bunny.

The Gallery of Arts & Culture (with Six Rivers Graphic Design) has local and regional fine art on display, including some unique sculpture. The Daily Triplicate features photographs by Bryant Anderson and Rick Postal, and oils by Laura Wiens.

In the courthouse, the Del Norte Association for Cultural Awareness will hold a closing reception ( 5-6 p.m. only) for the artists of the 18th annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition.

Most of these sites will have refreshments on hand, and John Parmentier will be playing guitar at both the courthouse (5-6 p.m.) and The Gallery of Arts & Culture (6-7 p.m.).
