Del Norte downs Crusaders |
Earns 48-34 road win in Eureka The Del Norte High girls varsity basketball team took control in the second half in a 48-34 win against St. Bernard’s on Wednesday night. It was a sluggish first quarter for the Warriors as they struggled putting in easy buckets and were tied at 12-12 at the end of the quarter. The team settled down and took a 21-17 lead at the half. In the second Del Norte started to make shots and took a 35-23 lead after three periods on its way to the 14-point non-conference win against the Crusaders of the Little 4. “We came out with more energy in the second half,” Warrior head coach Buzz McCulloch said. “All in all the girls played well.” Del Norte had a balanced attack as seven Warriors scored. They were paced by senior Lexie Nelson who had an excellent game with 15 points. Fellow senior Lauryn Lesina finished with 10 points. Ariana Spalding had six points while Paula Rhodes, Kristyn Rook and Katy Suzuki each had four points for Del Norte. Angela McQuillen finished with three points. Del Norte improved to 12-10 for the year while St. Bernard’s fell to 11-9. The Warriors junior varsity team was also victorious against the Crusaders on Wednesday night. Next for Del Norte is a Big 5 Conference road game against Fortuna on Friday starting at 7:30 p.m. On Wednesday Del Norte plays its last regular season home game on senior night against Arcata. The Warriors will end the regular season next Friday against McKinleyville. |
