CHP Officer Borges did right thing, but it will come back to haunt him

I would like to commend Officer Rick Borges for his actions which placed a high-ranking county offical in custody on suspicion of contributing to a very tiring and ongoing problem in Del Norte County, driving under the influence (“Auditor arrested by CHP,” Feb. 2).

It should be noted this officer did what he was hired to do, stand up and protect society from this accident waiting to happen. Officer Borges used his professional judgment to secure the public from harm, which I am sure will come back to haunt him, because his alleged offender was a very high-ranking offical of the county. This person should know what the law is. There is no excuse and now we must see if it is a conflict to prosecute her.

District Attorney Mike Riese stated he worked with her daily. That poses a big conflict. This should go out of the county.

One nice thing about living here is the quality of the local paper

I like this paper. The publisher and the editor are both fine people. I like the way they bring us the news and the public forum they provide.

People mention the natural beauty and friendly people as reasons for living here. But I seldom hear mention of our newspaper. So I’ll say it.

One of the nice things about living here is the quality of our local paper.

Panhandling ordinance places greater burden on the poor

The idea of restricting panhandlers seems to be reasonable until you look at the whole issue. There are poor people without housing, adequate food and mental health care.

Instead of pandering to the comforts of other citizens why don’t you address the needs of the poor so that they have no reason to beg? People with homes to live in are uncomfortable with people who don’t have a home to be in and want to keep them away from the glares of “good folks” who feel “unsafe” around them.

So give them places to be like you’ve made available to everyone else. City planning is remiss in providing for poor people. Panhandling ordinances do nothing to alleviate the pain and suffering of poverty. Instead you are placing greater burdens on poor people who deserve to be sheltered the same as any and all humans do.
