Valentine offerings from DNHS music Again this year, the Del Norte High School Madrigals are offering “valentunes,” which are singing grams. A song can be sung — over the phone or in person — to flatter or slightly embarrass a sweetheart. Cost is $5 per phone call, or call 464-0274 to inquire about personal visits. The Del Norte High School stage band, in conjunction with Tsunami Swing, will play host to “Sweets and Treats,” a swing dance concert, at 7 p.m. on Feb. 13 in the Veterans Hall, 610 H St. There will be East Coast swing instruction just before the music kicks off. Tickets cost $10 each and $18 for a couple, include a dessert, coffee, tea and juice, and are available at the door or in advance through stage band members.
The Redwoods Mural Society will present a community mural benefit including a silent auction from 6:30 to 11 p.m. on Feb. 20 in the Veterans Memorial Hall, 610 H St. Free dance lessons will be held from 7 to 7:30 p.m., followed by a brief mural society presentation. Dancing begins at 7:30 p.m., with music dee-jayed by Mark Machelli of Evergreen Sound & Lighting. Finger foods will be catered by Fabulous Food by Julie, and the Crescent City Elks Lodge will provide a no-host bar. Del Norte High School Theater presents a murder mystery dinner theater at 7 p.m. Feb. 26 and 27 in the high school’s multipurpose room. The production of “I’m Getting Murdered in the Morning” will feature a buffet catered by Julie Violante of Fabulous Food by Julie. Tickets cost $25 per person or $40 for a couple, and are available from DNHS theater students and at Del Norte Office Supply. The Art in Public Places exhibit up in the courthouse is a one-person show of 17 photographs by Brookings artist George Cady. Titled “Numberless Are the World’s Wonders,” the exhibit is comprised of both color and black and white pieces. The Del Norte County Courthouse is located at 450 H St., and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, excluding national holidays. For more information, call DNACA at 464-1336.
The artist of the month for February at Crescent Harbor Gallery is Crescent City artist Nancy Chernak. A sampling of her work is on display beginning Monday at 140 Marine Way, along with pieces by other gallery members. From teen artist to wife, mother, gardener, and tennis player, this artist has come full circle and revived her passion for painting. Winter hours are currently in effect: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Writers Conference in Gold Beach The South Coast Writers Conference will be held Feb. 12-13 in Gold Beach, Ore. Friday brings three all-day intensive writing workshop options, an evening keynote speech by John Daniel, winner of the 2006 Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award, and an authors’ reading, book sale and signing. On Saturday, four sessions of concurrent workshops will be held. The conference is cosponsored by Southwestern Oregon Community College and the Gold Beach Visitor Center. The Pistol River Concert Association presents western Massachusetts-based singer/songwriter Erica Wheeler at 8 p.m. on Feb. 13 in the Pistol River Concert Hall. Known for her visual, cinematographic style of songwriting, Wheeler’s music is pure Americana, falling into the categories of folk, country and bluegrass. Tickets are $15 each and are available at Mory’s or Words and Pictures in Brookings, and Gold Beach Books in Gold Beach. A $5 student discount or refund is available at the door.
