A tall-masted ship will be sailing for Crescent City Harbor soon,
and once it weighs anchor, people will be able to climb aboard for a
tour or possibly a sail.
The Hawaiian Chieftain is scheduled to arrive at the harbor at 4 p.m. Thursday, firing a cannon to sound its arrival, according to the Grays Harbor Historical Seaport organization that operates the tall ships Lady Washington and the Chieftain.
The Chieftain is scheduled to be here March 11-16 in its final stop of a “Hands on History for our Youth” tour.
The Citizens Dock at the Harbor will also be celebrating its 60-year anniversary, according to Harbor Commissioner Ron Phillips.
“For the celebration that night we’re trying to find pictures and stuff of people who have worked on the dock when it was being built,” said Harbormaster Richard Young.
“The harbor has some information, but we don’t have as much as we’d like to have,” said Young. “If persons have any information on the dock being built, pictures or stories we’d love to hear from them.”
People that have memories or pictures of building the Citizens Dock can contact the harbor at 707-464-6174
The harbor is planning a Chamber of Commerce mixer at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Chart Room Restaurant at 130 Anchor Way for the arrival of the Chieftain.
The Lady Washington will not be coming to Crescent City because it is undergoing repairs in Washington state so that it can satisfy California emission standards.
The Chieftain’s crew will be hosting dockside tours and sailing educational programs for Del Norte students throughout its six-day stay in the Harbor. An on-board gift shop will also be available for guests.
Schools interested in scheduling a program can contact Roxie Underwood, programs manager, at 1-800-200-5239 or at

Crew members will be in period costumes and available to answer questions. A $3 donation is requested when boarding the Chieftain.
Adventure sails are scheduled for next Saturday and Sunday, March 13 and 14, at 2 p.m. They feature crew in period costumes, cannon fire and maritime storytelling, and guests get the chance to help sail and steer the Chieftain.
Tickets can be obtained in advance by calling Grays Harbor Historical Seaport at 1-800-200-5239 or by visiting their website at www.historicalseaport.org.
